More Coach Volunteers Needed
by posted 07/01/2009

To field enough teams for all of the registered players, additional coach volunteers are needed.  It will require a minimal amount of your time each week from end of August to beginning of November. The league will provide all the training, materials and other support you may need to do it well. Inexperienced assistant coaches will be paired with experienced coaches.

The vast majority of last year's coaches were highly positive about their experience ... particularly the fun they had helping coach their child's team.

If you are interested in helping coach a team, and if you didn't volunteer to coach on your child's registration form, please let us know by sending an email to .

Thank you!

WFF Girls Take Gillette Tournament
by posted 06/17/2009

The Champions: From left - Anna Collins, Amy Livorsi, Rachel Meyer, Allia Connolly & Sage Riddick. Emily Chateauneuf on goal post.

The Westford Chargers, representing Westford Flag Football, won the Gillette Stadium Flag Football Tournament this past weekend in the 12-14 girls division.  Under bright, sunny skies, following in the footsteps of their Patriot heroes, the girls narrowly defeated the Peabody Chiefs 26-24 in the final game of an exhilarating best-of-three game series.

The outcome of the tournament was in doubt with 30 seconds to go in the final and deciding game.  From their own 5 yard line, and facing a 24-20 deficit, the Chargers stormed down the field.  After an incompletion on first down, Quarterback Sage Riddick hit Rachel Meyer (1 Td, 2 safeties) deep and with a nifty run after catch, the Chargers found themselves scrambling to get a final play off on their opponents five.  Emily Chateauneuf (1 TD and 3 PATs on the day) spun her long snap quickly as the girls ran their bread and butter “12” play with no time remaining.  Riddick (7 TD passes, 1 int on defense) hit Amy Livorsi (5 TD catches, 2 TD runs for the day) in the corner of the endzone for the winning touchdown.

As is almost always the case in football, great defense set up the winning drive.  The Chargers had to stop the Chiefs twice in the waning minutes to give themselves the opportunity to win.  Anna Collins (8 pass receptions on the day) stopped what would have been the put-away TD by the Peabody girls, as she grabbed a flag near the goal line after a long Peabody pass.  Allia Connolly (1 TD, 1 PAT), Livorsi, and Riddick played the tough “D” on the subsequent plays as the Chargers stopped the Chiefs on downs.  The Westford girls could not muster a first down and once more had to stop the Chiefs with time running perilously low.  Again, under pressure, the Chargers held the Chiefs and then hustled onto the field for the winning drive.

Rachel Meyer was so successful rushing their QB that Peabody changed their whole offensive scheme in game two to combat her quickness.  Game one had been a decisive Charger win, 23-7, as the girls used a variety of running, passing, and creative plays to keep the Chiefs off guard.  In game two, the Chiefs came out aggressively and evened the series, 20-12.  By the third game, the Chiefs had figured out the Charger game plan, and forced the Westford girls to play a more vertical game.  That’s indeed what they did, with Riddick hitting Livorsi, Meyer, Collins, Connolly, and Chateauneuf to seal the tournament victory.

Flag Football Teen Referees 15 or older
by posted 06/16/2009

If you know of any teenager 15 or older who is interested in refereeing WFF fall games, but who is not identified on any registration form for the 2009 season, please tell them to send an email to stating their interest to join the list of Teen Ref candidates and the email address(es) to use to contact them. If they are listed as a Teen Ref volunteer on a registration form, no need to send us an email (they are on the list of prospective Teen Refs).

To become a WFF Teen Ref for our 12-14 age games, they must be at least 15 years old, know the basics of flag football, attend a pre-season training session, pass a test proving adequate knowledge of our rules, and complete a survey on their availability and preferences. To remain a WFF Teen Ref, they can not miss a game for which they were scheduled and they must perform to certain standards when refing games.

Teen Refs will get paid $10 for each game or receive credit for WA's community service requirement (minimum 40 hours to graduate), but not both.

Results from 2008 parent surveys
by Ed Goodwin posted 04/03/2009

WFF sends a big THANK YOU to all parents who completed a survey on the league last November. A total of 231 parents completed an online survey; the highest percentage ever (77%)! This annual survey helps WFF understand what we are doing right and what we need to improve.

The key findings from the parent surveys are summarized below:

·         All but a few parents expect their son/daughter to play flag football again in 2009

·         Nearly all parents (90%+) were "Extremely" or "Very Positive" on most of the dimensions, particularly on:

§         Overall League Rating and Overall Value for the Fee

§         Amount of Fun for Players and Your Child's Playing Time

§         Coaches for Your Team

§         Number of Games and Number of Practices

§         Overall Organization and Management of League

§         Registration Process

·         Large increase in positive ratings over previous seasons for Rules Used for Games and Play-offs

·         Player Fun and League Organization/Management were found to be the most decisive strengths behind the overall ratings.

·         Vast majority of parents want to keep the season the same as 2008 (i.e., when start/end and # of games/practices). About one-fifth told us they would like to expand the season in some way.

The ratings by the 60+ coaches were very similar to parent ratings:

·         Large increases in positive coach ratings over previous seasons especially for Fun to Coach, Rules for Playing Games and Degree that Other Teams Followed the Rules.

·         Fun to Coach was found to be the most decisive strength among the 2008 coaches

Based on this feedback from parents and coaches, WFF will strive to maintain the above strengths in 2009 and give priority to making meaningful improvements on:

·         Team Balance

·         Quality of Refereeing

Please feel free to offer suggestions on how WFF should improve Team Balance and Refereeing by sending an email to  or

Thanks again for your support. We hope to see you on the field again this season. Registration opens soon.
